Council plans to keep pool open

Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool will remain open until the end of the school holidays if gate numbers support the plan.
The pool was expected to close this weekend as in other years with the end of daylight savings, however Cobar Shire councillors at a meeting last week discussed the possibility of keeping the newly refurbished facility open longer.
“This year is different, we already had a shortened season,” Cr Gerard Francisco said.
Council’s general manager Ray Smith said he held discussions with pool manager Peter Shanahan on Monday regarding keeping the facility open longer.
“He has agreed to keep it open subject to the weather and numbers through the gate,” Mr Smith said.
Councillors were told there is a high cost involved with keeping the pool open, with figures showing the electricity alone is costing $202.33 per day.
Council’s Director of Corporate Services Wally Black reported the water bill has also risen dramatically on previous years, costing around $25,000 compared with $3,000 for this period last year.
“The new pool, as I understand, turns over the water more times and meets the NSW Health Regulations,” Cr Harley Toomey said.
“The power bill is going to be a lot bigger but the health risk isn’t,” he said.
