Best rainfall all year tops up water storage

Wednesday July 1, 2009

Best rainfall
The Newey has become a haven for ducks after receiving a major top-up when almost 40mm of rain fell in just 24 hours on Friday and Saturday, taking the town’s monthly rainfall total to more than three times the average expected for June.

The best rainfall all year has drenched Cobar, with almost 40mm of rain falling in just 24 hours.

Steady showers on Friday were followed by heavier falls overnight with a total of 38.8mm recorded between 9am Friday and 9am Saturday.

The deluge has topped up the Newey Recreational Reserve, while all unsealed roads in the Cobar Shire were closed over the weekend.

Friday’s fall was followed up with more showers on Saturday, totaling another 6.4mm to 9am Sunday.

More than three times the average monthly rainfall has been recorded in Cobar for June, with 88.4mm measured to 9am Tuesday June 30.

Cobar also topped the region’s rainfall list for the week, with 27mm the next best rainfall recorded at Louth.

The total is a stark contrast to the dry start of the year experienced by Cobar, with below average rainfall in January, March and April and close to average rainfall in May.

The rain also kept the temperature down on Friday, with a top of just 12.2 degrees recorded and a slightly warmer 14.6 recorded on Saturday.

Earlier in the week unseasonal warm temperatures were recorded, with 22.3 degrees the top on Tuesday.

No more rain is forecast for the rest of this week, although a return to cool temperatures is expected.

A fine but partly cloudy day is predicted today with a top of 17 degrees, with similar conditions forecast for Thursday.

The temperature is expected to reach just 14 degrees on Friday although a fine day is predicted.
14 degrees is also forecast as the top temperature on Saturday and Sunday.
