Two locals elected as LHPA directors

Cobar district landholders Mark Johnson and Paul Evans have been elected as directors of the new Darling Livestock Health and Pest Authority board.
Mr Johnson was elected unopposed as the representative for Division E of the board which encompasses the south east area of Cobar Shire, while Mr Evans is the Division F director representing landholders in the west of Cobar Shire.
Bourke landholder Phillip Ridge will serve as the director for Division G, which includes part of Cobar Shire.
Other landholders elected as directors for the Darling LHPA are Robert Wason (Division A), William Turnbull (Division D) and Joan Myors (Division H).
No nominations were received for Divisions B and C, meaning a local ratepayer will be appointed to the board.
Darling LHPA returning officer Cec Dorrington said there was a good response to the contested division elections.
“We had five candidates in Divisions A and F vying for two elected director positions on the Darling Livestock Health and Pest Authority Board,” Mr Dorrington said.
“These positions were determined using the ‘first past the post’ voting system, with the candidate receiving the most number of votes elected in the division.”
The directors take office from today for a four year term.
“They will play an active role in how the authority is run and set local priorities and policies for animal health and pest animal issues.
“They will also be joined by two appointed directors who will bring to the table specific skills such as accounting, law, commerce or skills complementary to the role of the authority,” Mr Dorrington said.
Directors from the Darling LHPA will also be elected to sit on state wide committees to advise the state government on livestock health and pest animal issues.
