Efforts for town bypass renewed
Wednesday June 2, 2010
Efforts to establish a town bypass for heavy vehicles have been resurrected by Cobar Shire Council.
The matter was discussed at the recent Rural Roads Advisory meeting where it was recommended that council consider an alternative heavy vehicle route around town.
Councillors at last week’s ordinary council meeting resolved to revisit the issue with investigations into the possible alternatives.
Cr Peter Yench explained that the ideal route considered historically included Old Bourke Road near Cobar Pistol Club, the link road between the Kidman Way and Louth Road (which runs behind the racecourse) and the ‘pipeline road’ from Louth Road to the Barrier Highway.
However council has encountered issues in the past with the ownership of the link between the Barrier Highway and Louth Road.
Cr Bob Sinclair said there are a lot of concerns among locals about the amount of heavy vehicles in the main street.
“It might take a while for us to go through this process and get it established, but we’ve got to get the wheels rolling on the matter,” he said.
