Enterprise facilitation helps turn passion into a business

Wednesday June 2, 2010

Cobar Enterprise Facilitator Mark Workman with David Tomek from CarFX.

Apart from buying a house, the second most expensive purchase that you make in your life is buying a car and, like a house, you’ll want to look after it.
And who better is qualified to look after your prize possession than someone who appreciates its value as much as you do.
David Tomek is one such person and he could be described as being “car mad”.
Mr Tomek’s had an obsessive interest about cars since childhood; he has an extensive model car collection, has never missed watching a V8 race (whether it’s live at the track or on TV) and is always buying car magazines.
And now he’s found a way to turn that obsession into a business.
“I pride myself in keeping my car looking good and detail it regularly and then my friends started asking me to do theirs as well,” David said.
“It was one of them that suggested I should set up my own car detailing business and do it professionally.
“I started to notice that there are a lot of nice cars around town which could do with some professional treatment but I didn’t know how to turn a good idea into a business.
“Then I read in the paper about how the Cobar Enterprise Facilitation group had helped Alix Schaefer to re-open the cinema and I decided to talk to the Enterprise Facilitator Mark Workman about my idea.
“He was great and without Mark’s guidance, I wouldn’t have known where to begin.
“Mark helped me to sort through the process of setting up and running the business.”
Mr Tomek now operates his CarFX business from home and offers clients a range of services for their vehicles.
Customers may choose a basic wash and wax or give their vehicle the ultimate car clean treatment that includes a range of cleaning services inside and out as well as a multiple stage machine polishing for paintwork.
Mr Tomek chooses to use only professional industry standards approved products.
“I think it’s important to use quality products to give a quality service,” he said.
Mr Workman helped with some business goal setting.
“I also talked David through various options for getting the equipment and products he needed. We also discussed pricing and marketing options and I helped him with the rules and regulations relating to the business.
“David’s passion for making cars look as good as possible is the secret to his business’s initial success. He really cares about cars. He has great support from his wife Tahnee in the area of business administration and marketing.
“When I last checked he was booked out for three weeks and was having excellent results with vehicles that owners had given up hope on, mr Workman said.
“It’s great to have been able to turn something that I enjoyed doing into a business,” Mr Tomek said.
