Biggest event of its kind in Australia

Wednesday September 2, 2009

In 2008 Cobar hosted the inaugural Copper City Sheep Dog Trial which was heralded as the biggest sheep dog trial in Australia in 25 years.

And this year’s four day event at Ward Oval commencing on Friday is expected to be bigger than last year’s event.

Organiser of the event, Daniel ‘Stevo’ Stephens said the event had attracted a lot of interest from across New South Wales as well as from interstate.

The feature event at this year’s trials is the Landmark Russell State of Origin competition which will see the top dog handlers from New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania go head to head with their top working dogs.

New to this year’s event is the Tooheys Clash of the Codes with local identities from the rugby league, rugby union and AFL football codes taking on the sheep.

Both events take place under lights on Friday night from 6pm.

The Copper City Sheep Dog Trial not only gives handlers the opportunity to compete with their dogs, it is also an avenue for handlers to buy and sell working dogs.

“Some of the dogs on sale are Mocara Charlie, Mocara Toby, Granan Rowena, Lyster Fernanda, Viewfield Slide and Viewfield Sal.

“There will be plenty more dogs on sale from three months old to fully broken in and everything in between,” Mr Stephens said.

Spectators are welcome to go along and see the competition.

Entry to the event is free and a canteen will be available to the public.
