The 2009 Ronny Gibbs 7s rugby league and netball competition, held last Wednesday at Davidson Oval in Bourke, attracted the biggest ever number of teams in the event’s 13 year history.
Nyngan dominated the netball competition, winning both the Under 14 and Open
divisions, while Warren proved strong in rugby league, winning the Under 14 division and finishing runner-up in the Open division behind Gilgandra.
Twenty-nine teams representing nine schools from across the region took part, including Cobar, Bourke, Nyngan, Brewarrina, Warren, Collarenebri, Walgett, Condobolin, Gilgandra and Cunnamulla.
County Rugby League (CRL) Development Officer Ronny Gibbs, was in attendance and said he was pleased with the commitment and level of talent on display in both sports.
“The event provides athletes in the Far West of NSW an opportunity to play in a competitive environment and be able to mix with other athletes from different schools,” Mr Gibbs said.
“It’s great to see Cunnamulla from Queensland participate again this year, as well teams like Condobolin, Gilgandra and Collarenebri who drive more than three hours to participate,” he said.
Nyngan won the U/14s netball, stopping Cobar from winning three years in a row.
After seeing the U/14s win their division, the Nyngan Opens team was keen to make it a Nyngan clean sweep.
Nyngan faced Cobar 2 in the final.
Both sides were undefeated going into the final and it was Nyngan who won 7–3.
Sam Elder, from the Cobar 2 team, was awarded the best player in the final.
In the 14s rugby league competition, Cobar finished second in Pool A on the points ladder after they recorded a win over Bourke (16-8), a draw with Cunnamulla (20-all) and a loss to Warren (16-24).
They were defeated 32-4 by Condobolin in the semi finals.
Cobar’s Open rugby league side finished in third place behind Gilgandra (first) and Warren (second).
Cobar had beaten Gilgandra 28-16, Bourke (24-12), Walgett (40-28) and Brewarrina (24-20) but however lost in their matches against Warren (12-16) and Nyngan (20-24). —contributed
