The Cobar Camels Rugby Club has appointed three coaches for its two teams for the 2010 Western Plains Rugby season.
The coaching panel will be headed up by former Randwick player and Randwick second grade coach Netava Tagi who was an assistant coach for the Camels last season.
For the 2010 season Tagi will take on the role of head coach and will be assisted by John Carswell and Damian Wray.
“Both John and Damian have a lot of rugby experience.
“John has played in the west for a number of years and he also knows most of the players.
“Damian has had experience in Sydney and is also a former Camels player,” Tagi said.
“I’ll be in charge of the coaching from Monday to Thursday but after Thursday, the other two will be the coaches and I will be a player.”
Tagi said he is working toward a three year coaching plan for the club.
“Playing success will take time, I don’t expect it will happen overnight but we will build on the good work already achieved this season.
“I want to go another step forward next season and, while I don’t expect it to happen, if the team did make next year’s grand final, then that would definitely be a bonus.”
Tagi said there were a lot of new young players in the club and, while they had an abundance of natural ability and talent, many of them haven’t really played rugby before.
He said after having played a season with the Camels in 2009, he could see that the teams needed to work more on fitness and raising the skills levels of the players.
“They also need to get the confidence of winning games and we need to create a winning culture in the team.
“It is already here in the club—the club looks after its players, and there’s lots of support from everyone involved.
“The club is like a big family.”
Tagi has also called on the services of a friend and rugby mentor at his former Randwick club in Sydney.
“I’ve sent him down the videos of our games from this season and asked him his opinions.
“He’s come up with the same sorts of things that John [Carswell] and I have identified, so we know we are on the right track.”
Tagi is also using his rugby connections to source a couple of key players which the team currently lacks.
“That’s in the pipeline at the moment,” he said.
“I’m really looking forward to the challenge over the next three years.”
Cobar Rugby Club president Stuart Long said the committee will be giving the new coaching panel its full support in this rebuilding phase of the club’s history.
“I’m also happy with the calibre of the coaches we have for the upcoming season,” Mr Long said.
