Euabalong fights for equal restrictions

Mayor Lilliane Brady will meet with state water minister Phillip Costa this week to discuss Euabalong’s water situation.
The small village, along with Euabalong West, both in the shire’s south, are facing water carting this summer following a state government decision to dramatically reduce water flows into the Lachlan River.
A number of towns along the river are facing a dry summer with the Wyangala Dam at around five per cent of capacity, although few towns will reach the stage where water carting will be necessary.
A teleconference was held last week with representatives from Cobar, Cowra, Forbes, Parkes, Lachlan, Carrathool and Central Darling Shires regarding the situation.
Cobar Shire Council’s general manager Ray Smith reported that a major topic of discussion during the conference was the need for consistency with water restrictions among councils along the Lachlan River.
A notice to Euabalong and Euabalong West residents last week said a further teleconference on the matter is scheduled for tomorrow.
“Not all towns in the Lachlan Valley access the Lachlan River as their source of water.
“The alternative sources are usually ground/bore water,” the notice said.
The NSW Office of Water has determined that Euabalong residents will be limited to just 150litres of water per day once carting begins.
“Water carting will commence when the current levels in the Lachlan River at Euabalong reach the point where it is no longer possible to pump.
“This is likely to occur prior to Christmas,” the notice to Euabalong residents said.
