A piece of Cobar in historic Sydney icon
Wednesday December 2, 2009
An historic Sydney icon, the Queen Victoria Building (QVB), can boast a little piece of Cobar.
The building recently underwent a multi-million dollar refurbishment with improvements to its original grand stonework.
Cobar tourism manager John Martin said he received a call for help from one of the workers involved in the refurbishment.
“Rick Timperi, who is an Olympic boxer and was our Australia Day ambassador a few years ago, is also a stonemason and has been working on the QVB,” Mr Martin said.
“They were having some trouble matching the colour of new slate to be used with the old darker slate in the building.
“Someone in the industry told Rick that an old trick to darken the stone is to rub Cobar red dirt onto it,” Mr Martin said.
He said he received the call from Mr Timperi and obliged, sending down a special package of Cobar’s soil.
“I received a call a little while back from Rick to tell me that it worked a treat, so now there is a little bit of Cobar in the QVB,” Mr Martin said.
