Wednesday December 2, 2009

Sportsman's night
The RSL senior cricket team travelled to Nymagee on Saturday and returned home as winners with the Bert Oldfield Cup.

RSL are now the holders of the Bert Oldfield Cup after scoring a 24 runs win over the previously undefeated Nymagee team at Nymagee on Saturday.

RSL travelled to Nymagee with the early 9am start appreciated by the players, especially as the match went for 99 overs.

RSL won the toss and batted first compiling the very competitive total of 251 from 49 overs.

Paul Gauci, continuing his excellent form this season, top scored with 58 and was ably supported by Wade Potter 25, Travis Dunlevy 29, Dylan Prince 30 not out, Eathan Dunlevy 22, Glenn Spinks 17 and Shane Munro 16.

The highlight of the innings was the last wicket partnership of 54 between Prince and Eathan Dunlevy which proved to be the match winning partnership.

Doug North with 3/36, had the best bowling figures for Nymagee.

Other wicket takers were Chris Barnett 2/38, Wade Smith 2/48, Mitch Shields 1/20, Jade Buckman 1/21 and Phil Harley 1/43.

Nymagee batted their full 50 overs in an attempt to chase down the RSL score however fell 24 runs short with a score of seven wickets down for 227.

Nymagee’s star batsmen North (5) and Harley (15) were dismissed cheaply and it was left to opener Jade Buckman to anchor their innings.

Buckman remained not out on 110.

Other batsmen to make double figures were Shields (42) and Cole Jermyn (26)

The best bowling figures for RSL were recorded by Geoff Potter with 2/21 runs from 10 overs which is a great effort on the Nymagee pitch.

Other wicket takers were Clay Neale 2/31, Shane Munro 1/28, Spinks 1/56, and Wade Potter 1/62.

This is Nymagee’s first loss of the season and RSL are now the holders of the Bert Oldfield Cup.—contributed
