The local 50 and over a side senior cricket competition resumed after the Christmas break on Saturday with RSL Club claiming a win over Golf Club in their scheduled day/night match on the turf at Ward Oval while Ox Colts upset Nymagee at Nymagee.
The day/night match in town did not require the use of lights as it was finished after just 29 overs.
Golf Club batted first and was all out for a score of 48 from just 21 overs.
Sundries, with 11, was the top scorer for Golf Club with Matt Crotty (10) the only Golf Club batsman to reach double figures.
Next best was young Jesse Brennan who contributed nine runs to Golf Club’s meagre total.
RSL Club’s strong bowling attack was very effective with young opening bowlers Wade Potter (3/12 from six overs) and Shane Munro (3/23 from six overs) making the initial breakthroughs.
Their bowling was followed up by wily veterans Glenn Spinks (3/7 from five overs) and Geoff Potter (1/5 from four overs) who cleaned up the Golf Club tail enders.
RSL’s opening batsmen Peter Neale (with 20 not out) and Clay Neale (19 not out) made short work of reaching their target in only eight overs with RSL finishing at 51 without the loss of a wicket.
The other senior game at Nymagee was in direct contrast to the match played in town with 92 overs bowled in the game and a massive 576 runs scored.
Thankfully the players did not have to cope with excessive heat.
Ox Colts batted first amassing the huge total of 7/312 from their 50 overs.
Captain Stewart Fraser, with a welcome return to form, top scored with 124 and was ably supported by Stephen Nicholson (56), Tom Good (46) and Dan Howard (18).
Wicket takers for Nymagee were Chris Gilbert who took 2/15, John Potter 2/51, Wade Smith 1/19 and Mitchell Shields 1/50.
Nymagee began the huge run chase disastrously losing key opening batsmen Jade Buckman for four and Craig Dillon for 13.
Despite better performances from Matt Nicholson (58), Roger Mitchell (22) and Ben McBride (21) along with a great innings from Chris Gilbert, who scored his first century in the local senior cricket competition remaining not out on 114, it was not enough to see Nymagee through to a victory.
They were eventually all out for 264 from 42 overs, 49 runs short of their required target.
In an excellent all-round performance Fraser was the best of the Ox Colts bowlers with the impressive figures of 3/21 from his 10 overs.
To bowl at a rate of two runs per over at Nymagee is a significant achievement.
Other wicket takers for Occ Colts were Mal Hillier with 2/34, David Watson 2/80 and Tom Good 1/66.
In this week’s games Golf Club will be matched against Atlas Copco/Golfy 2 while RSL will meet Nymagee.
Both games will be played at Ward Oval.—contributed
