New doctor brings new skills to Cobar

Wednesday February 3, 2010

Dr Edyp
Dr Ruben Edyp this week joined the team at Cobar Primary Health Care Centre.

The Cobar Primary Health Care Centre (CPHCC) welcomed a new full time doctor to the centre on Monday morning.

After arriving in Cobar on Sunday night, Dr Ruben Edyp hit the ground running on Monday morning and, apart from commencing his general practice duties at the centre, Dr Edyp will also be rostered as a VMO (Visiting Medical Officers) at Cobar Hospital.

“Well he said he came here to work and there will definitely be plenty of that for him,” CPHCC practice manager Bernice Martin said.

“We are really looking forward to having Dr Edyp at the centre and I think he will compliment the doctors and staff we have here already.

“He thinks outside the square, has a holistic approach to medicine, also an interest in natural medicines and is keen to promote public health and wellbeing,” she said.

Dr Edyp said he has two medical degrees.

He graduated with his first degree in 1987 in Bulgaria where he practised for two years before moving to Australia at the end of 1989.

Dr Edyp then did further study at the University of NSW and graduated with his second medical degree.

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners.

Dr Edyp is also board certified with the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, an organisation that promotes a holistic approach to health and well being, and has approximately 20,000 members in 90 countries around the world.

“If you promote health, you have to be healthy,” Dr Edyp said in an interview on Monday.

Dr Edyp said maintaining good health and well-being and working to prevent diseases and chronic health conditions is a very important part of health care.

“Screening and detecting problems early, before they fully develop, is very important.”

Dr Edyp said education plays a vital role in looking after his patients.

Dr Edyp and Mrs Martin have already had discussions about holding health and well being information evenings at the centre.

“They would be on a range of topics and open to the general public,” Mrs Martin said.

“People could go along and listen to what Dr Edyp has to say and also ask any questions they may have.”

Mrs Martin said the centre has already received a lot of enquiries and requests for appointments with Dr Edyp regarding skin checks for cancer.

“Dr Edyp has previously worked at a skin clinic on the Gold Coast and has a lot of experience in this field,” she said.

After working for the past eight years in this area Dr Edyp said he is now able to carry out most routine skin checks in 10-15 minutes.

“He will also be able to carry out most procedures here at the centre and if it saves a trip away for people, that’s great,” Mrs Martin said.

Dr Edyp said he plans to stay in Cobar on a “long term” basis.

“I hope I can help the Cobar community.

“If there’s a response, I’ll stay,” he said.
