Cobar beaten by Bourke in Brewery Shield

Wednesday February 3, 2010

The Cobar Bowling and Golf Club Cowboys senior cricket representative team travelled to Bourke on Sunday to play the semi final of the Macquarie Valley Brewery Shield competition.

Despite the unavailability of star players Phil Harley, Stewart Fraser and Doug North, the Cobar team put in a brave effort in defence of the title they won for the first time last season, however on Sunday they were beaten by 17 runs in a close match.

Captain Craig Dillon lost the toss and Bourke batted first scoring 233 runs for the loss of seven wickets from their 50 overs.

Bourke’s star batsman and former NSW Country player, Ben Nott, was once again Cobar’s nemesis top scoring with 85 to follow up from the 98 he scored against Cobar in the Country Plate match between the two teams earlier in the season.

Cobar however had their chance to dismiss Nott before he reached double figures when he was dropped mid wicket.

Former Cobar player Scott Brown (who score 24 for Bourke) also proved to be a thorn in Cobar’s side.

The Cobar bowlers toiled hard on a field that featured a synthetic wicket and short straight boundaries.

Wicket takers were David Watson with 2/40 from nine overs, Damien Harbison (1/40 from 10 overs), Wade Potter (1/46 from 10 overs), Dillon (1/42 from eight overs) and Mal Hillier (1/53 from 10 overs).

The Cobar team was satisfied that limiting the Bourke to a score of 233 was an achievable target as they had chased down a similar total of 229 in only 38 overs at their previous meeting earlier in the season.
