Homes evacuated after gas leak at
service station
Wednesday December 3, 2008
Homes were evacuated and an exclusion zone set up around the Caltex Service
Station in Marshall Street last Wednesday after a vehicle’s LPG tank began leaking.
Police, fire brigade and ambulance personnel attended the scene at 3.25pm where a customer was filling their vehicle’s LPG tank, when a seal or gasket failed causing LPG to leak from the tank.
State Emergency Service volunteers and council staff also attended the scene to assist with the evacuation and road closures.
Senior Constable Geoff Richardson
said residents from several nearby homes
and persons at the service station were evacuated.
Firefighters sprayed a mist of water on the vehicle to dissipate the gas and secured the vehicle’s tank.
Senior Constable Richardson said the windy conditions on the day also assisted the operation.
Two fire personnel were treated at the scene for contamination by the gas.
“The scene was declared safe around 9pm and all roads were opened, and residents were allowed to return to their homes.
“Police appreciated the local residents and heavy vehicle drivers’ patience and cooperation during the emergency,” Senior Constable Richardson said.
