Hot weather not quite record breaking

Wednesday February 4, 2009

While not quite at the proportions of Melbourne and Adelaide, Cobar has been experiencing a heat wave of its own with the temperature climbing above 38 degrees every day for the past week.

The top temperature last week was measured on Sunday when it reached 40.8 degrees.

The coolest of the week was 38.5 degrees on Wednesday.

The current stretch of eight days above 38 degrees is still well down on the record since records were kept at the Cobar Meteorological Office since 1962, which was 16 days straight measured between February 6-21 in 2004.

Cobar Meteorological Office officer in charge Daniel Hayes said current forecasts are for Cobar to achieve the second longest stretch of days above 38 degrees, with at least another four days of hot temperatures predicted.

“In Cobar, Dubbo and Ivanhoe it is likely that by the end of the week the current hot spell will be the second longest on record and be approaching the top result.

“It is likely that it will be a similar story right through the districts,” Mr Hayes said.

However the current spell does not come close to records at Cobar Post office kept between 1881 and 1965, when 25 days between December 1883 and January 1884 were above 100F (38 degrees Celsius).

The forecast for this week is for temperatures to reach the low 40s every day until the weekend, with overnight minimums not expected to get below 26 degrees.

Today a fine day with a top of 41 is predicted, while tomorrow 42 degrees is forecast and another fine day.

Friday will be a scorcher with 43 degrees and a fine, sunny day predicted, while there is little chance of respite over the weekend with 42 degrees and 40 degrees forecast for Saturday and Sunday respectively.
