Work on main street upgrade kicks back into gear for 2009

Wednesday February 4, 2009

Main street upgrade work back on track
Work on Cobar’s main street upgrade project has started up again, with workers putting in time on Sundays to ensure the least amount of disruption to residents and businesses.

Upgrades to Cobar’s CBD area are back on track after more than a month break over Christmas, with workers putting in time on Sundays to minimise disruption to the public.

Cobar residents can start to get a look at what the upgrade will look like, with pavers laid at the GW corner (Linsley and Marshall streets) late last week.

Cobar Shire Council’s special projects officer Angela Shepherd said the next stage of the project will involve some road closures.

The southern side of Linsley Street (GW and Chemist side) will be closed first, with motorists unable to turn from Marshall Street into Linsley Street.

Works on that side of the street are expected to take approximately two weeks, before the opposite side of the intersection (Khan’s SUPA IGA and Harvey Norman side) is closed.

Marshall Street will remain open to traffic travelling both ways.

“Unfortunately there will be some parking spaces lost in Marshall Street for that time,” Ms Shepherd said.

“The closures are to install new drainage pipes.

“The RTA has supervised all the planned closures, as part of the traffic control plan,” she said.

Already a number of small trees have been removed from garden islands in Marshall Street as part of the upgrade works.

Ms Shepherd said the trees have been transplanted.

“I believe they are to be used up at the Miner’s Heritage Park,” she said.

Linsley Street will also lose a number of trees in the coming days to allow for a new look taxi rank.

“We secured funding last year to build a new completely undercover taxi rank, similar to those in Dubbo or Bourke,” Ms Shepherd said.
