Cobar Primary Health Care Centre has undergone some positive changes in recent weeks, with new staff, new qualifications and a return to 100 per cent bulk billing.
The centre welcomed husband a wife team Dr Nicolae Mohanu and his wife, nurse Mihaela Mohanu last week, while Dr Ram Sharma has been named as a Fellow to the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP).
Medical centre managers the Outback Division of General Practice (ODGP) have been negotiating with Dr Mohanu for a number of months for a move to Cobar.
ODGP chief executive officer Stuart Gordon said Mr Mohanu is originally from Romania, and has spent the past five years practicing out of Lightning Ridge.
“Dr Mohanu has previously been a member of the Division and we are delighted he and his wife Mihaela have decided to come and work in Cobar as his experience in primary health care and practice management will greatly compliment staff and systems established at the clinic,” Mr Gordon said.
Dr Mohanu at this stage has no definitive plans on how long his stay will be but Mr Gordon said he comes to Cobar “with an open mind’’.
“Dr Mohanu is in the early stages at looking at practicing in town on a Sunday as well, most likely on a fortnightly basis,” Mr Gordon said.
He said Dr Sharma’s full NSW registration and fellowship is a boost for the centre.
“Its hard to imagine that this time last year we were facing the prospect of Cobar having no GPs, to the present situation where the community will have access to four GPs, three of whom have FRACGP credentials.
“Full credit to the local practice staff who continue to provide an excellent service to people in Cobar, and it’s great news the Cobar Primary Medical Centre is 100 per cent Medicare.
“We hope to announce new visiting ophthalmology, ultrasound and more allied health services in the coming weeks,” Mr Gordon said.
Member for Barwon Kevin Humphries has welcomed the efforts of the ODGP.
“It is great that Cobar, despite its isolation from major centres, can still attract quality medical personnel to its great town.
“Cobar can only benefit from having four doctors in town to service people who require medical and clinical assistance,’’ he said.
