Touch returns to sweltering conditions

Wednesday February 4, 2009

Cobar’s summer mixed touch competition resumed at Ward Oval last Thursday with all four competition games being contested in sweltering heat wave conditions.

A Player of the Match performance by rugby star Justin Schick steered DJW to an impressive 9-5 victory over young improvers Joblink.

Chris O’Hara (2), Daniel Howard (2), Callie Fugar (2), Anita Hodgkinson, Schick and Netava Targi crossed for the winners while Riley Dawson (2), Shane Monro and Taylor Gilbert staged a second half revival for Joblink.

CCI Rebels faced vigorous opposition from lively youngsters RGM and, after leading 3-1 at the break, CCI were held scoreless during the second term.

Tries to Chris Gilbert, Brendon Everett and Rhys Power gave CCI their eventual 3-1 winning margin.

Josh Kemp combined smart ball skills and pace to post a consolation point for RGM.

The GW Spartans maintained their pre-Christmas winning form with a convincing 7-1 victory over Orana Credit Union (OCU).

Tries to Todd Fugar and Murray Robotham opened the GW Spartans account and, when Zoë Harland and Demi Smith touched down, the score blew out to 6-0 (female tries are worth two points).

Brett Pitkin also scored for the GW Spartans while Macauley Dawson managed a late reply for OCU.

Best and fairest honours were shared by Brittany Fugar, Pitkin and Dawson.

Cobar Brick Works (CBW) improved on a narrow 4-2 half time lead to outclass rivals Cool Runnings 10-2 in their match.

Clever support play by Bec Rogers contributed four points to CBW’s total while Raymond Ebsworth (2), Ben Turton (2), Simon Prince and Jed McBride also displayed excellent form.

Periods of brief counter-attack by Cool Runnings resulted in consolation tries to playmakers Michael Warren and Roger Minoz.—contributed
