Atlas Copco and Nymagee record wins on return to cricket

Wednesday February 4, 2009

Local cricket action
Raymond Ebsworth’s catch for Atlas Copco/Golfy 2 to dismiss Steve Manns was the final wicket in Golfie’s innings in their senior cricket match on Saturday.

The local senior cricket competition resumed on Saturday with Atlas Copco/Golfy 2 claiming a win against Golf Club while a century to Doug North helped Nymagee to an easy win over GW Colts.

Atlas Copco/Golfy 2 won the toss in their match on the turf at Ward Oval No 1 and sent Golf Club into bat.

Golf Club were dismissed for 117.

Rob Childs scored with 33 and was supported by Steve Manns 18, Scott Toomey 14, Damian Wray 10 and Greg Collins 9.

Atlas Copco/Golfy 2’s leading wicket taker was Bill Behsman with 4/8 from 5.3 overs.

Other wicket takers were Justin Richardson (2/23), Terry ‘Buddha’ Roberts (2/24), Jake Harbison (1/31) and Nicola Harbison (1/8).

Atlas Copco/Golfy 2 lost an early wicket in their innings with the score at 10 when Richardson was dismissed for four.

This brought Raymond Ebsworth to the crease and together with Rob Mitchell, they took the score along to 94 before Ebsworth was out for 36.

Mitchell remained not out on 57 and Matt Low not out 10 as Atlas Copco/Golfy 2 recorded a victory losing only three wickets for 118.

Wicket takers for Golf Club were Justin Negus (2/46) and Wray (1/26).

Nymagee captain Doug North won the toss in the other senior game on Saturday played at Ward Oval against GW Colts and elected that his team would bat first.

With the unavailability of regular opener Craig Dillon due to injury, John Potter put up his hand to open the innings saying he did not fear any of the GW Colts’ bowlers.

After holding up the start of play to make sure a water bottle was brought out onto the field to be held for him by the square leg umpire so that he could have a drink during his proposed long stay at the crease, Potter then faced up to the first ball of the match from Steve Nicholson.

He was horrified to hear the rattle of stumps and proceeded to walk back to the boundary to the heckling of his team mates and opposition players.

With further dismissals of David Betts for six and Matt Nicholson (13), the Nymagee score was only 3/24.

Phil Harley joined North at the crease and together they put on a partnership of 159 before North was out for a brilliant century (103).

Harley was dismissed shortly after for a more subdued innings of 56 and with the loss of further wickets at regular intervals, GW Colts’ bowlers were able to limit Nymagee’s total to only 235.

At one stage when North and Harley were in full flight, a score of in excess of 300 was well on the cards.

Murray Robotham was the best of the GW Colts bowlers taking 5/32 (his first five wicket haul in Cobar cricket).

Other wicket takers were Steve Nicholson (3/25), Stewart Fraser (1/13) and Craig Tanke (1/40).

A combination of good bowling and good catching from Nymagee and the GW Colts batsmen having to back up after fielding for 50 overs in the hot conditions, limited the GW Colts team to a score of only 92.

Sundries was the top scorer for GW Colts with 26.

Dan Howard made the most runs off the bat with 18 before being run out.

The only other batsman to make double figures was Jamie Baber with 14.

Wade Smith had the best bowling figures with 3/15 and his figures could have been better if he had been able to control the swing he was getting with the ball as he bowled 10 wides and two no balls.

Other wicket takers for Nymagee included Jade Buckman (2/7), North (2/11) and Harley (2/24).

In competition games this weekend, the RSL side will travel to Nymagee and GW Colts will take on Atlas Copco/Golfy 2 at Ward Oval No 1 on the turf .—contributed
