Nymagee through to grand final
Wednesday March 4, 2009
After beating GW Colts in the senior cricket major semi final on Saturday, Nymagee is safely through to yet another grand final appearance while RSL survived their close game with Atlas Copco/Golfy 2 to progress to next week’s final with GW Colts.
After winning the toss on Saturday and electing to bat GW Colts were unable to get any momentum in their batting, losing wickets too often.
After 28 overs they were just 7/65. Stewart Fraser was the only batsman to make any real contribution with 25 but the Nymagee bowlers also helped by bowling far too many wides.
Nymagee looked set to deliver the killer blow and set up an easy win and make it a short day.
However, Craig Tanke and Marc Fraser dug in for GW Colts and although not scoring many runs, kept Nymagee in the field for another 14 overs before Tanke was out.
In the end it took Nymagee 46 frustrating overs to dismiss GW Colts for 99.
Marc Fraser made his highest score in senior cricket with 12. Dillon was the pick of the Nymagee bowlers with 4/17.
Nymagee got a real scare in their batting when Dillon was out first ball of the innings and Doug North was dropped in the slips next ball; it could have been 2-0!
It wasn’t a costly drop as North only made five but it was shock stations in the Nymagee camp.
Jade Buckman and Phil Harley took the score to 48 before Buckman was out for 25.
Harley was well caught by David Watson on the square-leg fence (also for 25) and, at 4/62, the pressure was on Nymagee again.
A 30 run stand between Mathew Nicholson (17) and Roger Mitchell (20 not out) saw Nymagee safely through to yet another grand final appearance.
The match on Sunday between RSL and Atlas Copco/Golfy 2 was a much closer affair and came right down to the wire.
The trend for the weekend was low scores and this match was no different.
Atlas Copco/Golfy 2 batted first after winning the toss and made an excellent start of 27, however before long it was 3/42 as the consistent RSL bowling made the breaks.
Jake Harbison made 26 but it was Matt Lowe who held the Atlas Copco/Golfy 2 innings together making his best score of 38.
They were finally bowled out for 126 in the 39th over. Simon Prince took 3/29, Glenn Spinks 2/21 and Geoff Potter 2/23.
Needing 127 to win, RSL lost the consistent opening pair of Scott Brown and Peter Neale with only 25 runs on the board.
Geoff Potter and Todd Fugar both went cheaply and it took Clay Neale and Spinks to get RSL back on track.
The pressure was back on when Neale was out and Paul Gauci and Shane Munro also came and quickly went.
Wade Potter hung in there with Spinks but when he was out it was 8/97.
Damien Harbison took 3/32. Justin Richardson had created the break-throughs taking two wickets when the pressure was on.
Blake Dunne came in under pressure and although only made four singles, he helped Spinks add the last precious runs to take them to a thrilling victory.—Wisden
