Wet track forces Louth cancellation

Wednesday August 4, 2010

The Louth Turf Club has this year been forced to cancel the annual Louth Races meeting due to poor track conditions.
The club’s publicity officer Liz Murray said race club stewards made the call on Sunday afternoon to cancel the 2010 event following an inspection of the track.
“The track is unfortunately inundated with water, with no chance of being fit to race by the coming weekend,” Mrs Murray said.
“It’s very disappointing, especially after the Enngonia Races had to be cancelled this year as well.
“That’s two big race meetings cancelled for the western area this year.”
She said there will be a flow-on effect to the surrounding local economies.
“For many groups, the races are their main fundraiser for the year including the school, the tennis club, the Royal Flying Doctor Service and ICPA (Isolated Children’s Parents Association) and the Cobar Rugby Club.”
She said because the annual race event was not a picnic race meeting it could not be postponed.
The Louth Turf Club is affiliated with and governed by Racing NSW and the club is assigned one non-TAB meeting per year.
This date is set and cannot be transferred to another date.
Mrs Murray said she can only recall two, possibly three times, in the Louth Turf Club’s 50-plus years of history that a race meeting has had to be cancelled.
She said a large amount of planning and preparation goes into coordinating the Louth Races each year and caterers and trainers in particular were keen to know early if the event would not be going ahead.
“And while the races won’t be going ahead there will still be plenty of things happening in Louth this week,” she said.
