After the huge success of the Cobar Public School Choir in 2008, the school once again auditioned for a part at the 2009 Primary Choral Festival, held at the Sydney Opera House.
The group was successful and was selected along with around 175 other schools from across NSW, an excellent achievement considering the competitive audition process.
The choir was selected to participate in the Australis concert held on October 21.
Consisting of 12 talented singers from Cobar Public School and, for the first time, four from Cobar High School, the group practiced for nine months before heading to Sydney.
Their first performance was on national television performing the traditional gospel hymn ‘Down By The Riverside’ to close the Sunrise morning program on Channel Seven.
On Wednesday night the audience at the Opera House performance were treated to a night of musical excellence from talented School and student groups from all over NSW, including 11 songs performed by the combined choir.
The range of songs included gospel, show tunes, pop songs and works commissioned specifically for the festival.
Throughout the night the choir was supported with various musical accompaniments including solo piano, the NSW State Schools stage band and a full symphony orchestra.
The concert was a huge success and all of the students from Cobar were left with the memory of performing at the highest level with some of the most talented student musicians in the state.
To top off a wonderful trip away the group performed at Crown Street Public School on Thursday and were then treated to a surprise performance of the stage show ‘Wicked’ at the Capitol theatre. - contributed
