New florist, Upsy Daisy, is heading for business success

Wednesday November 4, 2009

Upsy Daisy opens
Mark Workman and Kelly Beard joined new business owners Mike and Tanya Ballinger to celebrate the grand opening of the Upsy Daisy florist on Friday night.

Cobar’s newest business, the Upsy Daisy florist in Marshall Street, has all the right ingredients of being a very successful local business.

Tanya Ballinger, the creative and talented owner of Upsy Daisy, is passionate about her work and an award winner of a national garden and art festival in New Zealand.

“I just love playing with flowers and I love the fact they can brighten someone’s day,” Mrs Ballinger said.

She also has the support of her family with husband Mike happy to help out with the heavy lifting and deliveries.

Then there’s Mrs Ballinger’s good friends who have helped her with ideas and advice and offered to lend a hand working in the shop.

Also helping to steer Mrs Ballinger on the road to business success is Cobar’s Enterprise Facilitator Mark Workman and his resource board.

“Mark has been a great mentor, if I had any questions, I just had to ask,” Mrs Ballinger said.

“Coming from New Zealand, business is different over there and it was great to have Mark to steer me in the right direction.”

Mr Workman said when he first met Mrs Ballinger he could tell right away that she was passionate about floristry art.

“And she was good at what she does, however she really didn’t know much about business,” Mr Workman said.

“I explained the Enterprise Facilitation trilogy of management concept to her, how the product, marketing and financial aspects of a business were all equally important.

“From our meetings I concluded that she seemed to know the product quite well, and was also capable of short term marketing ideas.

“We agreed that Tanya first needed to get her financial management in order and that she also needed some help to round out the marketing side of her business.

“She was introduced to bookkeeper Kelly Beard from Look No Further and our resource board who helped to set up a basic business accounting system and also a budget.”

Mr Workman then discussed marketing strategies and encouraged Mrs Ballinger to attend the Cobar Business Association’s marketing workshop hosted by Divine Branding.

“The seminar was great and I came away with a whole lot of marketing ideas,” Mrs Ballinger said.

Upsy Daisy officially opened for business on Saturday morning and stocks arranged and loose flowers, gift wrapped potted plants, gift baskets, balloons and hand made crafts by local artists.

“We have a flower service for weddings—the wedding corner just seems to have developed a life of its own—and can do traditional or funky, out there arrangements.

“If we haven’t got it, we’ll find a way to get it,” she said.

President of the Cobar Enterprise Facilitation (CEF) committee John Carswell wished Upsy Daisy every success.

“Not only does Tanya have her family and friends behind her in this new business venture, she’s also got the help of all the resources available through CEF,” he said.
