Floorboards book spot in grand final

Wednesday November 4, 2009

M&C Parisi Floorboards booked their spot in the mixed indoor soccer grand final after defeating Redbacks 6–2 last Wednesday night.

The Floorboards will now face Sandvik Sonics for the major prize tonight.

Floorboards took the early lead thanks to an own goal from Redbacks’ Peter Neale.

Neale however then made amends for the early mistake and levelled the scores with a long-range goal.

At half time Floorboards lead 2–1 after Rob Childs had scored just before the break.

Two second half goals from Jade Buckman extended Floorboards’ lead to 4–1 and the game seemed in the bag.

When Baden Smith scored ‘one of the goals of the season’ for Redbacks, the game went to another level as Redbacks came charging back.

However, with three minutes left on the clock, Floorboards put the final nail in the coffin when Zoë Harland scored from close range to seal the win.

The mixed indoor soccer grand final will be decided tonight between Sonics and Floorboards.

Sonics were first into the grand final after defeating Floorboards in the semi-finals.

Sonics finished the regular season in third position winning nine out of their 15 games.

They scored 74 goals (4.9 per game) and conceding 66 goals (4.4 per game) for the season.

Sonics attack in numbers leaving themselves vulnerable to counter attacks.

However, they’re a young, fit team which can switch from attack to defence with ease.

Although it will take a team effort to win, Wade Potter will be the danger man to Floorboards.

Potter is the Sonics top scorer with 18 goals this season.

Floorboards booked their spot in the ‘final dance’ after defeating Redbacks.

Floorboards finished this season as the minor premiers winning 13 out of their 15 games.

They scored 124 goals (8.3 per game) goals and conceding 39 goals (2.6 per game).

Floorboards count heavily on their defence and female goals (worth 2 points) to win matches.

They are the only team in the competition where the female players have out-scored the male players.

They will look to counter-attack at every available opportunity.

Floorboards and Sonics have met on four occasions this season. The honours are split with two wins apiece.

The statistics would put Floorboards as slight favourites but for tonight’s game Becks believes it is an even money bet.—Becks
