No cost blowout on main street works
Wednesday August 5, 2009
Media reports last week about main street upgrade works have prompted Cobar Shire Council to respond to reports of a cost blowout.
Council’s special projects officer Angela Shepherd said council has not be required to spend any extra funds on the project.
“Just because it’s taking a bit longer than planned, doesn’t mean that it’s costing any more.
“There have been a few extra bits and pieces in the budget, but there has also been a contribution from the RTA,” Ms Shepherd said.
She said delays in the overall project timeline have resulted from a range of issues, including the weather and the coordination of subcontractors.
“There’s surveyors, RTA representatives, and a whole lot of other sub-contractors that need to work together, and sometimes work has to wait on those people coming to town,” Ms Shepherd said.
“There has also been times when they’ve had to wait on materials arriving.”
Ms Shepherd said work is currently continuing as normal on the project, with changes to the intersection of Marshall and Linsley streets expected to be completed in the coming week.
“The island on the southern side of Linsley Street is almost complete.
“Council has booked the sealant for the road surface to be laid later this month,” Ms Shepherd said.
Paving subcontractors are also due back in town this week to “tidy up”.
She said the contractors are also considering night works to minimise the impact on main street businesses.
