An abundance of local talent showcased by our youths

Some of the Western Studio of Performing Arts’ youngest dancers, the ages five to seven group, showed a bit of ‘razzle-dazzle’ in their fluoro green outfits at the Outback Arts Outback Festival night of Speech at the Cobar Bowling and Golf Club on Friday night.

Cobar’s youth have proved there is no shortage of talent in the town after showcasing their music, speech, drama and dance skills last week.

The Outback Festival Music, Speech, Drama and Dance ‘Showcase of Talent’ was held last Thursday and Friday at the Cobar Bowling and Golf Club with the programme packed with talented performers both nights.

Newly elected Cobar councillor and local ‘celebrity’ Tracey Kings officially opened the event on Thursday evening.

Cobar Arts Council’s Narelle Retallick said the audience was “blown away” by the variety of performances on the first night of the showcase.

“Circus acts of juggling, poi, diablo and spinstix were a new addition to this year’s event,” she said.

The event was well supported by local schools with students from Cobar Public School giving recorder, choir, singing and piano performances, Cobar High students Gemma Bryan, Kyle Cartner and Wade Symons performing a musical guitar/vocals number, and the St John’s School’s Infants singing group who were described as “a highlight of the evening”.

“Readings of the news by primary students was also very entertaining.

“Individual performers, in speech, piano, guitar and singing all performed at very high standards,” Mrs Retallick said.

The dance programme on Friday night saw more than two hours of non-stop action from local school students and Western Studio of Performing Arts dancers, as well as a number of individual performers.

Mrs Retallick said the WSOPA ballet, hip hop, jazz, tap, ‘Jellybeans’ and older performers gave “some very colourful and polished performances”.

“Cobar Public school’s dance groups were among the dancers taking to the ‘new style’ dance floor for the first time at the Golfie,” she said.

She said other highlights included individual performances by Sara Langfield, Susannah Ham, Tayla Toomey, Logan Webb and Callum Sinclair along with St John’s School’s Infants dance group.

The Outback Festival was supported by Cobar Management Pty Ltd, Peak Gold, Endeavor Mine, Burgess SUPA IGA, Cobar Public School P&C, Red Earth Real Estate and Twisted Sisters.

“After the success of this year’s event because of the community participation and support, the Outback Festival sub-committee is now looking forward to 2009’s event,” Mrs Retallick said.
