Wednesday November 5, 2008

Regular Copper City Pairs bowls visitor Tom Howard from Nyngan (at left) has been coming to Cobar for the annual event at the
Services Club for more than 25 years. He is pictured above with local bowler Pat Prendergast at the Services Club on Saturday.
A field of 28 teams were on the greens at the Services Club on Saturday and Sunday for the annual Copper City Pairs lawn bowls tournament.
Teams from the Services Club and the Golfie were joined by players from Nyngan, Tamworth, Hillston, Gilgandra, Trangie, Broken Hill, Parkes and the Orb Bowling Club.
The winner of the weekend’s event was the Nyngan team of Mick Parry and Adam Lee.
The runners-up were Bob Fowler and Laurie Asef from Tamworth while a team from the Orb Bowling Club took out third position.
The best card on Saturday was held by the Golfie team of Rod Leahy and Terry Clyde Jnr.
Visitors B Young and B Meredith from Trangie had the best card on Sunday.
There was some great displays of good bowling with locals Bill Dickson and Don ‘Duck’ Datson reporting they scored eight points on the last end of their last game.
During the presentations, club president Stuart Brown acknowledged the event’s sponsors, Ron Cabot of White Top Taxis, the National Australia Bank, Central West McCarthys and Carlton Breweries.
He also made special mention of the many organisers and helpers of the event.
In other bowls news from the Services Club, Wednesday’s Golden Oldies game had only a small field of players on the green.
The winners were Rod Leahy, Alan Strange and Norm Bargwanna.—Wrong Bias
