The Cobar Blues A and B Grade Netball teams played their first away games of the 2009 Northern Riverina League season on Saturday at Hillston with the A Grade side having plenty to celebrate about on the trip home after they recorded a 43 point win.
B Grade however came home wondering just how their match ended in a 30-all draw after they were four goals ahead in the late stages of the game.
The Cobar A Grade side dominated their match from the outset to record a huge 64-21 victory over the Swans.
Once again Cobar’s Goal Shooter Lane Poland was faultless under the net, using her height advantage to help the Cobar side rack up their huge full time total.
Jaimee Cohen stepped up into the Goal Attack’s role and her outstanding effort earned her the coach’s award this week.
Other strong performances were recorded by Centre Tanya Huon (who was named Players’ Player) along with Vanessa Kurta and Amie Jacklin in defence who were responsible for a number of turn-overs throughout the match.
Coach Gerard Francisco said this “somewhat easy” game against Hillston gave the team a chance to put into place attacking drills they have been practising during training.
“Previously we were concentrating on player fitness at training but now I believe the players have reached the level of fitness they need and so now we are focusing on our tactics,” coach Francisco said.
He said it was vital errors late in the Cobar B Grade’s game that cost them a win.
“But we’ll learn from that.
“This was only a competition game, but if it had been a grand final match I wouldn’t have been happy,” Francisco said.
The Cobar B Grade side started confidently and had the upper hand for most of the game, however that control slipped away in the late stages of the match. A break on a Cobar centre pass in the final minutes of the match led to a handover and subsequent goal by Hillston who then scored from their centre pass which put the match back onto an even keel.
Cobar then had to settle with a 30-all draw.
Amy McConnville was superb in defence for Cobar and collected the Players’ Player and Coach’s award from the game. Centre Brittany Fugar was also a stand out player for B Grade.
