First round win for Camels
Wednesday May 6, 2009

Hooker Danny Smith scored the Camels’ first try of the season on Saturday at AFMO.
Lots of hard work by the Cobar Rugby Club in the off season has already paid big dividends with the Cobar First Grade side scoring a comprehensive 43-10 win over visitors Warren at the Ailsa Fitzsimmons Memorial Oval (AFMO) on Saturday.
The Camels’ convincing first round win of the 2009 Western Plains competition has also sent a loud and clear message to other teams that the Cobar Camels are most definitely going to be a force to be reckoned with in 2009.
Saturday’s game was only minutes old when Cobar opened their account with hooker Danny Smith diving over for the Camels’ first try in the corner.
With Warren’s defence quickly unravelling, halfback Matt Low was able to cross soon after for the Camels’ second try.
A successful penalty goal gave Warren their first points and Cobar went to the half time break with a 10-3 lead.
The Pumas were then completely taken by surprise when the Camels launched a series of attacking raids at their line which resulted in three more tries to Low, Lachie Sullivan and Dan Howard.
Warren was unprepared for the Camels’ new backline who showed plenty of pace which was backed up by a strong forward pack.
Cobar did most things right and it was only a couple of ball handling errors and a failure to win more of their line-outs that marred the team’s first scorecard of the season.
Best and fairest points went to Netava Tagi (3), Dan McGrath (2 points and players’ player), Low (1) and Sullivan (1).
