Police operation on local highways

Wednesday July 7, 2010

Police will be saturating locals roads over the coming months in a bid to stamp out speeding with a new operation underway until October.
Operation Crackdown will see police focusing on the Barrier Highway between Nyngan and Emmdale and the Mitchell Highway between Trangie and Bourke, targeting speeding and fatigue.
Cobar Highway Patrol police officer Senior Constable Derek Fraser said the operation will include high visibility patrols as well as stationary and mobile random breath testing by Darling River Local Area Command (LAC) highway patrol officers.
“Police will patrol along these highways which have seen an increase in injury and fatal motor vehicle accidents during the past 12 months within the Darling River LAC,” he said.
The operation kicked off last Thursday with 12 speeding offences detected over the weekend.
Among the most serious was a P1 licence holder from Dubbo who had his licence confiscated on the spot.
He was detected driving at 137km/h (P platers are restricted to 90km/h), had a low range prescribed concentration of alcohol, was not displaying P plates and was in breach of a condition on his licence limiting him to one passenger.
“Police are requesting that drivers obey the speed limit and drive to the conditions of the road when travelling along these highways,” Senior Constable Fraser said.
“If travelling for any distance take regular breaks and share driving responsibilities.”
