Roosters dig deep against the top of the table team
Wednesday July 7, 2010
The Cobar Roosters were on the road on Sunday travelling to Parkes for Round 8 of the Tooheys Group 11 competition where they met the top of the table team.
The Roosters were forced to travel without their full squad of players with a number of Bourke based players not available for the match.
Reserve Grade coach Jarrod Marsden said it was admirable to see six First Grade players backing up to play two matches.
“Whereas in Forbes earlier in the year we forfeited Reserve Grade, but the players had no hesitation in putting their hands up for two games on Sunday,” he said.
First Grade: Ladder leaders Parkes showed why they are firm Group 11 favourites with a dominant display across the park on Sunday.
Cole Jermyn, Damien Frize and Troy Hayman worked tirelessly in the middle and halves Chris Gilbert and Jay Egan looked good with the ball, but the Roosters were unable to stop the Spacemen’s roll in the forwards and they trailed 46-0 at halftime. To Cobar’s credit they never dropped their heads and several promising raids fell desperately short. The final score was 62-0 in Parkes’ favour.
Coach Jermyn said after the game he could not fault the Roosters’ effort on the field, but that the score was a direct reflection of what both clubs put in off the field, with the Spacemen’s superior fitness and cohesion the difference between the two teams.
Reserve Grade: It was a tight first half with Cobar running in just one try to Damien Frize after good lead up from Ian Orcher and Brett Triton. Parkes replied and it was 4-all at half time. Parkes came out firing in the second half and skipped out to a 20-4 lead before late tries to Brendan MacInerny and new recruit John Roberts got the Roosters back to within a try.
With 60 seconds left, the ball went through nine sets of hands before half MacInerny put through a grubber kick that was kicked dead by a Parkes player with four Cobar players desperately unlucky to grab the game-winner.
Parkes claimed the 20-16 win.
Under 18s: While the Cobar side tackled well in close, they however couldn’t contain the strong Parkes backline with the young Spacemen running away with a 66-0 win.
