The Mushroom Riders passed through Cobar last Thursday on their way from Sydney to Perth. Apart from being a fun exercise, the group are raising funds for the Westmead Breast Cancer Institute and the Western Australian Cancer Council.
The 2010 Mushrooms For Life Charity Motorbike Ride passed through Cobar last Thursday on their way from Sydney to Perth.
The ride was organised through the Australian Mushroom Growers organisation to raise money for breast cancer research.
The ride’s media person Chris Rowley said the idea for a motorbike ride across Australia came about after last year’s annual Mushroom Growers conference when the members were sitting around and having a beer.
“They got to talking and found out that a lot of them had an interest in motorbike riding and decided they would ride to the next year’s conference in Perth and make it a charity ride,” Mr Rowley told The Cobar Weekly.
David Tolson, one of the main organisers of the ride, said the choice to make the ride for Breast Cancer was an easy one.
Mr Tolson said the Australian Mushroom Industry had made a long term investment in research that examines how a regular meal of mushrooms can potentially help fight a range of serious diseases, including breast cancer and Alzheimer’s Disease.
“On average Australians will eat one mushroom every three days.
“For increased health benefits, our research shows that people should try to eat one mushroom a day,” Mr Tolson said.
The group of 25 riders included Australians as well as riders from the Netherlands, Italy and Ireland.
All are involved in some way with the mushroom industry.
To date the riders have raised over $43,000 through industry support and public donations.
The funds raised by the event will be split equally between the Westmead Breast Cancer Institute and the Western Australian Cancer Council.
