Empire finish season on a high note
Wednesday February 8, 2012
Empire finished their Twenty/20 cricket ordinary season on a high after a closely fought three runs win over CSA on Friday night at Ward Oval.
Empire captain Damian Wray won the toss and elected for his side to bat first.
They finished with a reasonable total of 111 from their 20 overs.
Rob Fing top scored for Empire with 41 (which included 5 sixes).
Will Josephson with 21 and Jason Cooper on 19 (including one six) were the other batsmen to reach double figures.
Chris Gilbert was the leading wicket taker for CSA with great bowling figures of 3/11 from his three overs.
He took all three wickets in his final over to finish off the Empire innings.
Other wicket takers for CSA were Tony Polack with 2/12 from four overs; Tadg Waugh 2/26; Travis Dunlevy 1/10 and Warren Lionnet 1/17.
In reply CSA batted out their 20 overs and were restricted by some tight Empire bowling to finish with a total of 9/108 from their 20 overs.
Needing 27 runs from the final two overs for victory, CSA fell tantalisingly short with last man in for CSA veteran Geoff Potter almost getting them home scoring 27 not out.
Travis Dunlevy top scored for CSA with 32 (including one six) and other batsmen to reach double figures were Jason McLeod 15 and Jay Egan 12.
Rob Fing completed a fine all round performance finishing with the figures of 3/14 from four overs which included a “hat trick”.
This is only the second time a “hat trick” has been taken in the Twenty/20 competition.
Wray also took three wickets for 22 which included two wickets from the first two balls of his spell.
Jason Cooper (2/21) and Craig Youd (1/14 )were the other wicket takers for Empire.
The Subway Player of the Match was Fing and the Best Fieldsmen were Cooper (Empire) and Lionnet (CSA).
This Friday’s match will be played between Endeavor and Golfy Heroes and, although both teams will continue on in the competition whether they win or lose this match, a big win for Golfy Heroes could see them displace Ox Bushies as minor premiers.
Alternatively a big win for Endeavor could see them finish in front of Golfy Heroes on the competition points table.—contributed
