Wednesday March 8, 2010
Cobar Police have been astounded by the reckless behaviour of a number of motorists on local roads over the Easter long weekend.
Among the worst was a 20 year old Queensland man detected travelling at more than double the speed limit in Cobar’s main street, with more than three times the legal blood alcohol limit in his system.
Local police carrying out the statewide
Operation Tortoise detected 26 speeding
offences on local roads, and issued 13 infringement notices.
Senior Constable Peta Murphy said at around 10pm last Thursday police detected a vehicle in Marshall Street travelling at 111km/h near the intersection of Morrison Street.
She said the vehicle had three young male passengers, and the driver returned a positive breath test result.
He was arrested and conveyed to Cobar Police Station where a breath analysis showed he had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.15.
The man was charged with driving with a high range prescribed concentration of alcohol and is expected to appear in Cobar Local Court in May.
Senior Constable Murphy said highway patrol officers detected a 31 year old Sydney male travelling at 153km/h on the Barrier Highway west of Cobar on Monday.
The man was fined $647 and will lose 10 demerit points from his licence due to the double demerit points operation over the weekend.
Police were also disappointed by a number of other offences detected over the weekend.
