League puts out a ‘Call to Arms’ for players to commit
Wednesday April 8, 2010

The Men of League’s Tom Good, Ted Brown, Ritchie Douglas and Ian Prendergast met with Cobar Rugby League’s executive Harley Toomey and Mick Hart along with coaches Cole Jermyn and Jarrod Marsden at a ‘Call to Arms’ meeting at Tom Knight Memorial Oval last Wednesday night.
Roosters coaches Cole Jermyn and Jarrod Marsden have put out a ‘call to arms’ to all potential rugby league players in Cobar.
Reserve Grade Coach Marsden said the club has been struggling to get enough players to training each week to be able to field three teams for this year’s competition.
“There’s a core group of guys who have been turning up regularly to training but there’s also another 20-30 guys around town who are yet to commit, saying maybe they’ll play, maybe they won’t,” Marsden told The Cobar Weekly.
“We want them to make it a firm ‘yes’ or ‘no’ so we can see our true position.
“We want to get the guys committed now especially with our first trial game coming up this week against Gilgandra.
“We don’t want to start the season with maybes,” he said.
Marsden explained that Cobar Rugby League was in a unique but dangerous position.
“Playing in Group 11 we can’t just forfeit a game or drop Reserve Grade for a year.
“If we don’t field three full sides each week, they’ll kick us out so it’s important that we know the club’s position before the 2010 season begins.
“A lot of great men and women worked really hard to get the Roosters into Group 11, and there is a great crop of junior talent coming through.
“We want the players to come along, enjoy their footy on and off the field, recognise the club’s history and be a part of ensuring this batch of youngsters has a club to play for,” Marsden said.
Cobar Rugby League president Harley Toomey said all the club wanted from these potential players was a commitment.
“It would make it a lot easier on the club, and the players and maybe it will also drag in more supporters,” Toomey said.
Players who are able to make a commitment to join the Roosters this season are urged to contact First Grade Coach Cole Jermyn, Reserve Grade Coach Jarrod Marsden or any member of the committee to declare their interest.
Or they can go along to training at Tom Knight Memorial Oval on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights.
