Cobar’s 2008/2009 mixed touch competition was finalised last Friday with A and B Grade grand finals played at Ward Oval followed by a barbecue and awards presentation evening at the Cobar Bowling and Golf Club.
In A Grade, GW Spartans defeated RGM
7-3. Both teams turned on sparkling end-to-end attack that kept referee Peter Ford on his toes, but the lack of several key players, including captain Doug North, and no reserves quickly told on RGM’s ability to maintain the relentless pace.
Early tries to Brett Pitkin (2) and Zoë Harland gave the near-full strength GW Spartans a handy 4-1 halftime lead and, when Gerard Francisco crossed soon after the restart, the margin increased to 5-1.
A Paul Gauci and Tristan Everett-led counter-attack provided RGM some hope at 5-3 but late touchdowns by quick steppers Sean Cox and Matt Garland ensured a decisive premiership victory for GW Spartans.
Cox was named best and fairest.
In B Grade, Joblink defeated Cobar Brick Works (CBW) 7-4 in an action packed match controlled by referee Chris Barnett.
The game was tied 1-all for most of the first half, with vigorous defence giving way to lively attack and a free-flowing contest that then resulted in tries at both ends.
Riley Dawson (2), Reegan MacKay, together with female stars Taylor Gilbert and Callie Black scored for Joblink while Raymond Ebsworth (2), Rohan Lloyd and Ray White touched down for CBW.
Best and fairest points went to Joblink’s Taylor Gilbert.
At the presentations Rhys Power (35 tries) and Zoë Harland (22 tries) collected trophies as the highest male and female point scorers for the season.
Best and Fairest honours for the season went to Macauley Dawson and Jasmine Bain.—contributed
