Nurses Roadshow visits Cobar to discuss local issues

Nurses roadshow
Cobar Hospital nurses met with representatives from the NSW Nurses Association last Thursday as part of their tour of the north west region.

Staff from the New South Wales Nurses Association (NSWNA) Nurses Roadshow 09 visited Cobar Hospital last Thursday as part of their north west tour.

Organiser for the Greater Western Area Health Service area Linda Griffiths, along with Kate Lee from the NSWNA, last week visited hospitals, health services and aged care facilities in Walgett, Collarenebri, Lightning Ridge, Brewarrina, Bourke and Cobar to speak with nurses about local issues that affect them.

NSWNA assistant secretary, Judith Kiejda, said the Nurses Roadshow was like a mobile office, providing nurses in the north west with literature, advice and also gave them an opportunity to talk in person with association officials.

“NSWNA officers will be listening to the views of nurses on the current issues facing nursing, health care and aged care.

“These include the nurse shortage, workloads, pay and conditions, violence in the workplace, funding and the impact of the global financial crisis,” Ms Kiejda said.

She said during these tough economic times, it was important to keep health and aged care systems in top shape.

“There is no doubt governments are under financial pressure, but that should not be used as an excuse to run down our health and aged care systems or increase the pressure on nurses and other health workers.”

The Roadshow stand also provided information on professional and industrial nursing issues, pay rates and scholarship information.

During last week’s visit Ms Griffiths said she was pleased to be able to advise Cobar’s nurses that they would be receiving a 3.5 per cent pay increase in their next full pay.
