Wednesday July 8, 2009

Cobar Public School’s student representative council members led a NAIDOC Week ceremony last Friday with special guests St John’s School principal Deb Fryer, CPS principal Jonathan Harvey, local Aboriginal elder Joan Evans, Cobar Shire Council’s Ray Smith and Bob Sinclair and Cobar High School’s Peter Cochrane.
Cobar Public School (CPS) led NAIDOC (National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee) Week commemorations with a special assembly at the school last Friday.
The school’s student representative council led the proceedings, speaking about the importance of the nationally recognised week.
CPS student Gizella Szekley explained to the assembly the significance of the week.
“NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
“NAIDOC Week is celebrated not only in indigenous communities but by Australians from all walks of life,” she said.
The theme of NAIDOC Week for 2009 was ‘Honouring our Elders, Nurturing our Youth’.
Official guests including principals from all three local schools, Cobar Shire Council and local Aboriginal elder and chairperson of the Cobar Community Working Party Joan Evans participated in a flag raising ceremony where the Aboriginal Flag was raised.
Mrs Evans also spoke at the assembly about the local indigenous population.
Earlier in the week CPS students attended dance workshops with Mirii Yulugi Dancers, heard Dreamtime stories using Smartboards with access to elders from the Australian Museum, and made chalk artworks.
