Dedication needed

Wednesday June 9, 2010

According to rugby league Reserve Grade coach Jarrod Marsden injury and work commitments are always going to be a factor for any sporting team in Cobar; however he said a lack of dedication to the club is something that no coach can plan on.
“It is plain to see for everyone that has watched the 2010 Roosters play that all three grades are more than capable of giving the Group 11 competition a big shake.
“An away win at Narromine and a narrow loss to heavyweight’s Dubbo Macquarie is proof enough,” Coach Marsden said.
“However the Group 11 Round 5 match last week had just seven local grade players available to travel to Forbes.
“This type of dedication shown by this small group needs to be displayed by everyone who has put up their hand to put on a Roosters jersey this year if the Roosters are to have a long or short term future,” Marsden said.
In the Under 18s game on Saturday at Forbes the Roosters started slowly and found themselves behind 28-0 at half time.
“After a rev up from Coach Benn Wright they came out with a much better attitude and although beaten 34-18, actually won the second half which bodes well for their next clash at home to Wellington in two weeks time.
“When their heads are on the paddock the young Roosters are a semi-final quality side, but they must turn up every week if they are to challenge the top teams,” Marsden said.
“Due to a lack of grade players from Cobar (Bourke/Brewarrina supplied 13 players on the day!) the decision was made to forfeit the Reserve Grade game. This was unfortunate after the side achieved its first win of the season the previous week,” Marsden said.
In the First Grade game the Roosters forwards really took it to a big Forbes side early, but failed to capitalise on a big wind at their backs. The Roosters dominated field position but could not crack the line. After letting in two soft tries from long range, the Roosters rebounded to post their first points after a huge run from prop Brian Smith. At half time they trailed 16–4.
Marsden said the first half was marred by an ugly spear tackle on Roosters winger Sean Cox, who took no further part in the game with a neck injury.
“Three more serious injuries late in the first half meant the Roosters were left with no reserves for the second half. With the wind behind them and a tiring Cobar defence, Forbes took full advantage and posted nine unanswered tries to win 68-4.”—contributed
