Flood damage bill on roads may be up to $1million

Wednesday March 10, 2010

A number of Cobar Shire roads remain closed due to flood damage from heavy rainfall in February.
Around $1million in damage is estimated to have been caused by the flooding.

The Darling River Road (Shire Road 3) suffered a major washout of part of the road, and there is still some water lying around, while the Palesthan Road (Shire Road 36) is also still partly underwater.

Major reconstruction is required on the Tallebung Road (Shire Road 21), where a culvert was completely washed out and collapsed.

Council’s director of engineering works Stephen Taylor said in a monthly engineering works report those roads may remain closed for some time.

He reported that works are also required to reopen Buckanbe Road (Shire Road 1), Budda Road (Shire Road 2), and parts of the Darling River Road, but are expected to be completed within a fortnight.

The Kidman Way near Box Creek was closed for four days in total, but is now open, and the Sandy Creek bridge on the Kidman Way sustained some damage.

Mr Taylor said “protection work” at the bridge had been “significantly damaged” and would require repairs.
He said flood damage assessments are
still being carried out on a number of roads, with RTA inspections also still to be carried out.
Mr Taylor reported that flood damage
repairs had been carried out on a number of roads, including Mt Gap Road (Shire Road 7), Grain Road (Shire Road 20), Sandy Creek Road (Shire Road 16) and Shuttleton Road (Shire Road 15).
