Cobar wins two against Nyngan

The 2009/2010 representative cricket season concluded last Sunday with Cobar’s 1st and 2nd Eleven teams winning the annual Shane Smith Memorial Trophy (1st’s) and Tom Cooney Trophy (2nd’s) matches against Nyngan at Nyngan.
Cobar were defending both trophies which they won last season in Cobar.
In the 1st Eleven match Cobar’s captain Phil Harley won the toss and batted first.
Opening batsmen Jake Harbison and Tom Good made a solid start with a partnership of 30 from just seven overs. However both lost their wickets in the next over with Good dismissed for two and Harbison 27.
Peter Neale and Harley doubled the score to 61 before Harley was dismissed for 20.
Regular wickets then continued to fall and Cobar had slumped to 8/104 from 32 overs.
However, partnerships of 38 between Mal Hillier and Robbie Mitchell and 18 between Hillier and David Watson, took Cobar’s total to 160 before Watson was the last man out on the first ball of the 50th over.
The ever reliable veteran Mal Hillier continuing his good form this season and remained not out on 24.
The Cobar bowling attack was on top of Nyngan batsmen right from the start of their innings with Nyngan at one stage loosing their first seven wickets for only 28 runs.
Their late order batsmen took the total to all out for 70 from 27 overs.
Wade Potter continuing his good season, was the leading wicket taker with 3/17.
Damien Harbison was the best of the Cobar bowlers taking 2/6.
David Watson with 2/26 from seven overs, Phil Harley 1/10 and Matt Nicholson 1/2 were the other wicket takers.
Cobar’s 90 run victory means that they have won the Shane Smith Memorial Trophy for all of the six years it has been played.
The 2nd Eleven team captained by Jade Buckman lost the toss and fielded first.

Cobar’s bowlers limited the Nyngan team to a score of 124 from 45.3 overs.
Justin Richardson was the pick of the bowlers with the figures of nine overs, five maidens and three wickets for 16. Other wicket takers were Shane Munro with 2/17 from 10 very tidy overs, Glenn Spinks 2/27 from 10 overs, Clay Neale 2/23 from 8.3 overs and Baden Smith 1/19.
Cobar passed the Nyngan total in the 39th over for the loss of only three wickets with captain Jade Buckman leading the way remaining not out for 39.
John Hausia made a swashbuckling 35 which included three sixes and two fours. Clay Neale topped off a good weekend scoring 21.
Nyngan won the Tom Cooney Memorial Trophy in the first two years it was played for however Cobar have now drawn even having won the trophy the last two years.—contributed
