RSL holds onto the Bert Oldfield Challenge Cup
Wednesday December 10, 2008

RSL’s Geoff Potter hit out lustily with the bat in his senior cricket match on Saturday afternoon but it was his bowling (5/12) that earned him man of the match honours.
The RSL senior cricket team, in their first defence of the Bert Oldfield Challenge Cup since their big win over
Nymagee last week, proved too good for Atlas Copco/Golfy 2 on the turf at No.1 Oval on Saturday.
Batting first on a green-top wicket which played consistently throughout the day, RSL struggled early.
They lost 3/28 before Geoff Potter and Clay Neale steadied the ship to take the score to 4/49.
Paul Gauci then helped Potter add 42 runs before they were both out quickly and looking as if it might be a struggle to make 100.
Wade Potter and Brad Dunne added some very important runs before RSL were all out for 124.
Damien Harbison (3/17) and Matt Low (3/27) were the main wicket-takers with Terry Roberts chipping in with 2/22.
Rob Mitchell took five catches.
Atlas Copco/Golfy 2 had their chances and, at 5/84, should have got up but four wickets fell in two overs and the “Young Guns” were bowled out for just 98.
Low 29 and Sam Sellick 20 had a good stand and, at one stage, threatened to take the game away from RSL.
Once again it was man of the match Geoff Potter who delivered the knockout blow taking 5/12.
Simon Prince also joined in at the death of the innings taking two wickets.
If Golf Club is going to challenge RSL for the Bert Oldfield Cup next week they are certainly going to have to improve on the ragged form they have displayed so far this season.
They batted first against GW Colts in their match on Saturday and could only manage a total of 48 which GW Colts reached in four overs.
In a very ordinary batting display (which included five ducks), nobody reached double figures and that great all-rounder, sundries with 20, was well and truly the highest scorer!
Stephen Nicholson seems to be regaining some of his old rhythm back and bowled well to take 3/21 with support from Stewart Fraser 2/3 and Alex Fraser 2/18.
There were three leg-before-wicket decisions going against Golf Club.
When GW Colts batted they lost Alex Fraser for a duck well caught by Eathan Dunlevy at mid-off before Daniel Howard chanced his arm and swung lustily, hitting two sixes over “cow corner” and scored 27 not out.
Murray Robotham, in a style that would probably not satisfy the purists, hit five fours in his 20 not out.
The game was over early and a Golf Club team was left needing to have a good close look at itself before they take on RSL next week.
This week Nymagee will be keen for a better showing than their last game when RSL bowled them out for 50.
They will be up against Atlas Copco/Golfy 2. Colts has the bye.—Wisden
