Tougher water restrictions?

Wednesday February 11, 2009

In light of the prolonged hot weather, Cobar Shire Council is this week reminding residents that Level 2 water restrictions are still in place with all outside watering banned between 8am and 6pm each day.

Cobar Shire Council general manager Ray Smith said the town has been coping well over the dry spell.

“We have plenty of water in our storage facilities due to receiving our 100 per cent water allocation.

“If we adhere to current water restrictions we should see ourselves through the summer but obviously if people are not complying that jeopardises our water supply and strong restrictions will need to be imposed,” Mr Smith said.

“A number of local residents have been observed breaching these restrictions and they have been given warning letters to which they have complied.”

Mr Smith said all council staff have been alerted to be on the look out for residents ignoring the restrictions and report any breaches back to council.

“If residents continue to ignore the current restrictions then council will be forced to introduce tougher restrictions to ensure the sustainability of the town’s water supply,” Mr Smith said.

“We all need to be vigilant with our water during these extreme heat conditions.”

Level 2 restrictions do not permit sprinklers, irrigations systems and hand held hoses to be used for outside watering between 8am and 6pm.

The hosing down on hard surfaces is also not permitted under current water restrictions.
