Cobar Yabbies clean up at Western Districts Carnival

Matt Harland was the star of the Western Districts AIF (Australian Infantry Forces) Swimming Carnival held at Nyngan on Sunday winning the 50 metres Scratch and 30 metres handicapped events.
He was also a member of the 4x50 metres Scratch Relay with Scott Toomey, Peter Ford and Murray Harland and a member of the Cobar team that won the 10x50 metres relay event.
Cobar Yabbies had their most successful carnival of the club’s history winning seven of the 15 events conducted with every swimmer returning home with a trophy.
Other winners were Frank Young with a win in the 30 metres RSL Handicap event and second place in the Under 50 RSL Scratch Race.
Tom McIver was second in the 30 metres Handicap.
Murray Harland finished first in the 50 metre Open Handicap and was also a member of the winning 4x50 metres Scratch Relay team.
Cobar entered two teams in the 10x50 metre relay finishing first and second.
Thee Yabbies swimmers combined with Wellington to also win the 6x50m RSL Relay.
In the local competition last week at the Cobar pool, there was a big roll up 29 swimmers (including Kevin Mitchell visiting from Canbelego) with swimmers using the event as a fine tuning session prior to Sunday’s Western Districts Carnival.
Two swimmers, Stu Harland and Paul Swainston, were farewelled after the swim.
Swainston had a memorable last swim in Cobar winning the 30 metres event.
He swam to within 0.03 seconds of his nominated time.
Michael Howell was second (0.10) and Bob Clark finished in third place (0.15).
Geoff Davis (0.02) was the winner of the 50 metres event with Cliff Poland (0.06) second and Bill Fugar (0.17) third.
Peter Claxton, with a time of 0.05 outside his nominated time, was well ahead of the field in the 100 metres event to take first place.
Swainston was second on 0.55 and Matt Harland finished in third place (1.01).
Harland and Poland won the Brace Relay with a time of 0.04 seconds outside their nominated time.
John de Bruin and Fugar were second (0.24) and Claxton and Justin Richardson (0.67) were third.—contributed
