St John cadets test their skills in Cobar

Wednesday March 11, 2009

ICPA executive
Forbes St John Ambulance cadet and first time competitor Brian Dunn and adjudicator Trevor Murphy (Division officer Broken Hill) assess the mock accident between a pedestrian and a cyclist as part of the St John Ambulance First Aid Competition held in Cobar on Saturday.

Cobar was chosen as the central location to help St John Ambulance cadets hone their first aid skills in a competition environment.

Junior St John volunteers from as far away as Broken Hill and Molong, and many other towns in the region, converged on Cobar on the weekend to test their skills with mock situations, set up at various locations around Cobar.

St John Western Region cadet officer Michael Baggott (from Bathurst) said the weekend was a “full-on” competition with moulage (casualty simulation) for cadets to practise and learn new skills.

“Around 35 people all up are involved in the competion this weekend,” Mr Baggott said.

The competition included teams, cadet leader and individual events, ranging from preliminary to senior first aid skills tests.

“The cadets have no idea of what the scenarios are beforehand.

“Judging is carried out by officers from each division who are trained adjudicators.

“We also had a state staff officer from Sydney as the competition’s head adjudicator,” Mr Baggott said.

While Cobar was chosen as the host town for the competition because of its central location for competing divisions, there were no locals competing because there isn’t a local cadet division.

“I’d love to have a cadet division in Cobar, but there needs to be a management team in place for that to happen,” Mr Baggot said.
