The Cobar Yabbies (Senior Men’s Swimming Club) certainly made a name for themselves over the weekend at the 73rd Annual AIF Swimming Association of Australia Championship Carnival in Albury when they won the most prestigious event of the meet.

Dubbed “the main event” of the carnival, The Wentworthville Leagues Club Trophy Open Six Man Scratch Relay was taken out this year by the Cobar Yabbies team of Scott Toomey, Bill Fugar, Matt Harland, Murray Harland, Stuart Harland and satellite swimmer Zac McLeod.

They beat the second placed host club Albury by a good three metres.

Formerly the “most prestigious event of the carnival” was the 10 man handicap relay (an event Cobar has previously won).

This year the Cobar team placed third in the 10 man event.

In other events, Bob Clark claimed third place in his 60-65 years championship event, Stuart Harland was third in his 40-45 years championship swim, McLeod was second in the 18-24 years championship final with Matt Harland finishing in fourth place.

Fugar and John Carswell both qualified for the final of the 50 metres open handicap event but due to “timing technicalities” both finished out of contention.

The national carnival attracted 450 swimmers with teams competing from Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales.
