Space Cadets go one better this year

Thursday June 11, 2009

Netball champions
The Space Cadets are the 2009 Mixed Netball Competition champions.

After finishing as runners-up in the 2008 mixed netball competition, the Space Cadets have gone one better this season and won the 2009 competition.

Although beaten two weeks previously in the major semi final by their grand final opposition GW, Space Cadets turned the tables on GW in Tuesday night’s grand final match to win 39-32.

With their major semi final game having to go into extra time to decide the winner, the grand final match was also expected to be a close encounter.

At their last meeting neither team was at full strength however both sides had a full complement for the grand final match.

Space Cadets started strongly and had two goals on the scoreboard before GW got themselves into the game.

GW’s Goal Shooter Zoë Harland was in excellent shooting form and, while tested by Space Cadets’ towering Goal Defence Graham Harbison, she used her speed to outwit him in the goal circle and score the bulk of GW’s goals to keep her side in contention until the final stages of the match.

Player of the Grand Final, Space Cadets’ Nicola Harbison playing at Wing Defence, was responsible for a number of intercepts to create numerous extra opportunities for her shooters Jaimee Cohen and Lane Poland to score.

Space Cadets led 11-8 at the end of the first quarter and, while GW managed at times to level the scores, Space Cadets wanted the grand final win more.

They were 21-15 ahead at half time and extended the lead to 10 goals at three-quarter time, 31-21.

GW rallied in the final quarter and, at one stage, was only six goals behind however Space Cadets, spurred on by their big cheer squad on the sideline, was not going to let the grand final prize slip out of their hands.

They went on to win convincingly 39-32.
