A multitude of careers on display

Thursday June 11, 2009

CHS Careers expo
A range of career options were on display at the Cobar High School Careers Expo at the school yesterday.

Cobar High School (CHS) students and community members got to take a closer look inside many different jobs as part of the school’s Careers Expo yesterday.

Local students were joined by community members and students from Nyngan and Bourke to find out more information from more than 40 stallholders at the expo.

CHS careers advisor Lee Goodwin said he was extremely pleased with the response from the community for the expo.

“It’s more than just a chance for students to pick a job.

“It’s a great way for parents and community members to engage with the students,” he said.

Among the exhibitors were many local small businesses as well as representatives from the three local mines, government departments, the Western Institute of TAFE, Central West Group Apprentices and Charles Sturt University.

Other exhibitors included NSW Fire Brigade, Police and Ambulance officers; Cobar Shire Council, St Laurence O’Toole’s Catholic Church; Cobar Enterprise Facilitation and many more.

Mr Goodwin said the students would benefit from the wide range of careers represented at the expo.

“There is a chance for two-way feedback.

“The employers can engage with students, and the students have the chance to find out more about what employers need and want from them,” Mr Goodwin said.

Local Ngiyampaa Elder Sharron Ohlsen and Regional Vocational Education Consultant Michael Williams from Broken Hill officially opened the expo.
