Cobar sand green golfer Matt Egan has had the biggest win of his career, taking out the 2009 Queensland Men’s Sand Green championship in St George over the long weekend.
A score of 64 on the first day of competition had Egan four shots clear at the top of the field, after recording eight birdies including four in the final four holes.
Egan managed to hold off a strong comeback from Ipswich golfer and Golf Queensland representative Adam Gemmell, shooting a one under par 69 to finish two shots clear at the top of the leader board.
The win also meant a reduction in Egan’s handicap.
Egan finished ahead of a “tough” field of 170 players, which featured some of Queensland’s top golfers including two current Queensland state representatives and three-time winner of the Queensland Sand Greens event.
Around 15 players who competed in the event had handicaps of less than two.
Players from 47 different clubs, including a handful of NSW clubs, competed in the event.
Fellow Cobar golfer Michael Ryan also competed in the event, but finished out of the
placings.
